Ganesh Puja

Ganesh Puja

Lord Ganesha, the second son of Lord Shiva and Parvati, is perhaps the most worshiped god in India.

According to legend, once Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, created a child's effigy out of clay. Enchanted by its beauty and overcome by motherly instincts, she gave life to it. thus Ganesha was born. She wanted to take bath and clean herself. Before going for bath she instructed Ganesha to guard the place and not to allow anyone inside.

Soon Lord Shiva returned home and the dutiful Ganesha, not knowing Shiva, blocked his path and refused to let him in. Lord Shiva, the supreme trinity who never had his path blocked by anyone, was furious and cut off the head of Ganesha and entered the house.

Needless to say that goddess Parvati made a scene! To appease her Shiva wanted to bring Ganesha back to life. Unfortunately the chopped off head was nowhere to be seen. With the goddess making a racket behind him, Lord Shiva asked his men to go in the northern direction and bring the head of the first living being they foung. They soon returned with the head of an elephant.

Shiva attached the head to Ganesha's body and brought him back to life.

Shive is the ruling deity of astrology. He is also the Lord of Learning and the Lord of Obstacles, which is why he is called Vighnaraja. When Shiva is please, he removes obstacles from your path on auspicious occasions, and places obstacles in your path to prevent you from going somewhere inauspicious. When Shiva is displeased, he does the opposite.

Devi Puja

Devi Pooja

It is said that in the beginning God, who was one, wanted to become many and enjoy himself. As the first step to creation he created Devi - the total cosmic Female force, also called Prakriti. For the male part, out of his left he created Shiva, out of his middle he created Brahma and out of his right he created Vishnu. That is why many regard the Devi as more powerful than the Trinities and hence She is called Parashakti or Paradevi - Para meaning beyond . Brahma created the universe. Vishnu controls and runs the universe. Shiva along with Shakti is engaged in the eternal dissolution and recreation of the universe. Hence by worshipping the Devi one is actually worshipping the highest ultimate force.

When Banasura, the demon king became all powerful and the Gods were unable to kill him, Lord Vishnu prayed Devi and she manifested in the form of Goddess Durga. During her battle with Banasura Goddess Durga created Kali and Chandi out of herself. Hence Durga, Kali and Chandi are the three most commonly worshiped names and forms of the Devi. Amba, Ammavaru, Chamundi, Danteswari, Lalita, Tripura Sundari, Meenakshi, Shodasi, Visalakshi are the other names and forms in which she is worshiped in various parts of India.

According to the scriptures and the various devi stotras the abode of the devi is the Vindhyachala, the mountain range that runs through the north-eastern Andhra Pradesh. No wonder that each and every town or village in Andhra has an Ammavru temple where the Devi is worshiped.

The photograph at the top of the page is that of Goddess Kamkshi of Kanchi. Ka-Ma-Akshi when translated means the Goddess has Lakshmi and Saraswati as her eyes, or one who gives you learning and wealth with her glance. It has the closest resemblance to the description of the devi in her original form as given in our scriptures - " The radiance of a thousand raising suns, three eyes, resplendent in red clothes, wearing a crown with the crescent moon, holding in her hands a bow of sugarcane, goad, arrows of flowers and a cord."

There are many types of Devi worships, the highest and the most coveted one being the worship of Devi in the Shree Chakra with the Highly guarded Shodasakshari mantra. Given below is a very simple but very effective Devi pooja which every one can perform daily. Those interested is the Shree Chakra pooja will find it in the poojas page.

Shri Chakra Pooja

Shri Chakra Pooja

Chakra pooja or Yantra pooja is the worship of a deity in a diagrammatic form. This type of worship exists in a lot of the other parts of the world also.

The worship of Devi in Shreechakra is regarded as the highest form of the Devi worship. Originally Lord Shiva gave 64 Chakras and their Mantras to the world, to attain various spiritual and material benefits. For his consort Devi he gave the Shreechakra and the highly coveted and the most powerful Shodashakshari mantra, which is the equivalent of all the other 64 put together.

It is said that in the beginning God, who was one, wanted to become many and enjoy himself. As the first step to creation he created Devi - the total cosmic Female force. The Bindu in the center of the Shreechakra is the symbolic representation of the cosmic spiritual union of Shiva and Shakti. Apart from that the Shreechakra also embodies countless number of deities and represents the whole of creation. Hence by worshipping the Devi in Shreechakra one is actually worshipping the highest ultimate force in the Tantrik form.

The Shodashakshari mantra is one of the most guarded secretes of tantra. Usually the Guru gives it to a highly deserving and tested disciple. Very few get it. Even in the Mantra Shastra, where all other mantras are openly and clearly given, the Shodashakshari Mantra is not directly given. Several hints about the mantra are given and you are asked to get the mantra if you are capable and deserving. The opening versus of the mantra shastra chapter on Shreechakra says, "Your head can be given, your soul can be given but the Shodashakshari Mantra of the Devi can not be given".

Various books and websites on Shreechakra have published what the publishers thought is the Shodashakshari Mantra. Let me make it clear that those who know it will never publish it and those who publish it do not know it. I cannot give it to my wife or child. So don’t waste your full moon nights chanting those long mantras.

However, Shreechakra can also be worshipped by other Devi mantras. There are several traditions of the worshipping the Shreechakra. We are giving below a very simple and still very effective pooja of Shreechakra. It is known as the Shreechakra Navavarana pooja as per the Khadgamala Vidhi. For all round spiritual and material benefits it is a highly effective pooja. Anyone can perform it.

The Shreechakra is a very deep subject. A lot can be written about the Nine Avaranas in the Shreechakra, about the 43 triangles, the various Devies and Devatas and their significance etc. This information is already published in several books and websites. The purpose of this page is not to repeat or elaborate on what is already there but to give you a simple but effective way of doing the actual pooja which is what really matters and something which no one else has bothered put in English. Hence Instead of gathering a lot of technical information, it is better that you sit down and do an effective pooja. Prophet Mohammad rightly said, "A man who reads a lot of books is like a donkey carrying a load of books". Lord Krishna definitely said that Gyana yoga is the best path. A lot of people, especially the ones with pseudo intellectual ego who look down upon ritualistic worship and don't want to bow their head, mistakenly believe that reading of philosophy books and empty intellectual discussions are the Gyana yoga path. It is not. Adi Shankara was very clear in stating that the Gyana yoga is only for the Gyanis, and a Gyani is one who has reached the Paramahamsa or Avadhoota level. Great yogis like Rama Krishna Paramahamsa, Swami Shivananda and Swami Satyananda belong to this category and not people like us.

On the top left hand side corner of the Shreechakra resides Lord Ganesha. On the top right hand side corner resides Lord Surya. On the bottom right side corner resides Lord Vishnu and at the bottom left corner of the Shreechakra resides Lord Shiva. Hence, before performing the Shreechakra pooja you must perform a brief pooja of the above four deities. These poojas are given in the Pancha Pooja section in this site. Apart from these four, the Devi along with her retinue (Parivar) of 108 other Devies reside in the Chakra. In this pooja they are worshipped one by one.

Devi worship must be done only after taking bath and wearing clean clothes. As per the rituals to be observed - various pooja books and websites prescribe long preparations and rituals for poojas. It is not possible for every one to perform a pooja like an ordained Vedic priest. Hence our scriptures allow one to do a pooja "Yatha shakti" or as per ones capability and convenience. Doing it with faith is what really matters. The minimum is: light a lamp and an incense stick and offer some prasad - if you don't have anything at home then simple milk or sugar will do.

People worship the Shreechakra made of various materials and in shades. The simplest and the best one is a clear diagrammatic picture. In the olden days people used to draw the Chakra on various materials. Now you do not have to go through all the trouble. You can use a simple printed one, which is equally effective. We have enclosed one for your benefit at the top. Take a print out of it to worship. Preferably laminate it so that it is not soiled or damaged.

While doing the pooja of the various deities in the Nine Avaranas, you can worship the Chakra with Akshintas (Turmeric rice) or flowers or with Panchamrut.

The Devi is worshipped in many forms and names - Lalita, Katyayani, Kameswari, Kamakshi, Durga, Chandi, Kali, and Amba etc. The closest matching form of the Shodashakshari Devi as described in the scriptures is that off Goddess Kamakshi of Kanchi. You will find this in the Devi pooja section.

The Anganyasas and Karanyasa beejas are also given for the benefit of those who are conversant with this ritual. If you do not know you can omit it.

If you are conversant with the other pooja rituals like Aachamanam, Bhuta Suddhi, Dehasuddhi, Shankha pooja, Kalasha pooja etc., you can perform them before the actual pooja. If you do not know simply offer a prayer to Lord Ganesha and do the pooja. At the end of the pooja offer the following prayer.

"Avahanam najanami, najanami visarjanam, poojamchaiva najanamani kshamaswa Maheswari. Yatkrutam yatkarishyami tathsarvam twamarpanam, poojam poorna phalam kuru".

Roughly translated it means - "I am not conversant with the Aavahana, visarjana etc.. pooja rituals and hence forgive me. Whatever I have done and I am doing, I am offering to you. Give me full results". Our ancients were also smart!

This pooja, along with the four other poojas that must be performed before that, will take about 45 minutes time but it is more effective than any other pooja both materially and spiritually.

The Scribe Everlasting
Pushpadanta's Siva Mahimna

May the Mighty Meru - Sovereign of Mountains - provide the pigment,
Let the basin of the Seven Oceans be the inkstand,
Let the branch of Kalpaka, lordliest of Heaven's trees, serve as pen,
Let the Earth, with her limitless expanse, offer herself as parchment,
With these as writing gear,
Let the Goddess of Knowlegde herself play the Scribe - Write on and on,
for aeons upon aeons - Still, Spirit Eternal!
The Volume of Thy Glories Infinite, will mock her racing hand,
With the lure of an ever receding 'Finis'

Shree Ganesha Pancharatnam
I prostrate before Lord Vinayaka,
who holds modaka in his hand with great joy,
who bestows salvation,
who wears the moon as a crown on his head,
who is the sole leader of those who have no leaders,
who destroyed the elephant demon named Gajasura,
and who quickly destroyed the sins of those who bow down to him.

I resort to that Lord continuously,
who is frightening to those who are not his devotees,
who shines like the rising sun,
to whom all the Gods and demons bow,
who removes the great distress of his devotees,
and who is the Best among the best.

I bow to the shining Ganapati
who brings happiness to all the worlds,
who destroyed the demon Gajasura,
who has a big belly,
beautiful elephant-face,
who is immortal,
who gives mercy, forgiveness and happiness
to those who bow to Him,
and who bestows fame and a well-disposed mind.

I worship the ancient elephant-god
who destroys the pains of the poor,
who is the abode of 'Om',
who is the first son of Lord Shiva (destroyer of the triple cities),
who destroys the pride of the enemies of the gods,
who is frightening to look at during the time of the world's destruction,
who is fierce like the elephant in rut, a
nd who wears Dhananjaya and other serpents as his ornaments.

I constantly reflect upon that single-tusked god only,
whose lustrous tusk is very beautiful,
who is the son of Lord Shiva, the god of death,
who tears asunder all obstacles, a
nd who dwells forever in the heart of Yogis.

He, who recites every morning, with devotion,
these five gems about Lord Ganapati,
and who remembers in his heart the great-Ganesha,
will soon be endowed
with a healthy life,
free of all blemishes,
will obtain learning,
good sons,
longevity,
spiritual and material prosperity.

Lust at the sight of a woman's body
springs from ignorance, springs from error;
Inwardly reason, over and over,
bodies are flesh, blood and fat.

Uncertain is the life of man
As rain-drops on a lotus leaf;
The whole of human kind,
is prey to grief and ego and diseases.

While a man supports his family,
see what loving care they show!
nearing the time of dissolution
But when his aging body falters,
none, not even his nearest kin,
will think to ask him how he fares.

While man's soul remains in his body,
Fondly his family wish him well;
But when the life-breath leaves its dwelling,
Even his wife will flee in fear.

Lost in play is the carefree stripling,
Lost is his sweet-heart's charms, the youth;
The old man broods upon his sorrows
None, there is, alas, whose spirit
yearns to be lost in the Parabrahman.

Who is your wife?
And who is your child?
Strange indeed is this mortal world!
Who are you?
And who is your own?
Brother, ponder on these things.

Good association breeds detachment;
Detachment leads to freedom from delusion;
Undeluded, one contacts changeless Reality,
Contact with Reality, bestows Liberation while alive.

Youth being fled, what good is passion?
Water gone, what use a lake?
Where to be found our friends and kinsmen?
Once the money's all exhausted,
Where is the world? When Truth is known?

Boast not of youth or friends or wealth,
Swifter than eyes can wink,
by Time, each one of these,
is stolen away,
Abjure the illusion of the world,
And join yourself to Timeless Truth.

Sunrise and sunset,
daylight and darkness;
Winter and springtime,
come and go,
Even the course of Time is playful,
But man's vain hope, alas! goes onward,
Timelessly onward, evermore.

Dreaming of wife, dreaming of wealth,
Why do you roam restless as the wind?
Is there none to take you in charge?
Know then, my friend, in all the three worlds,
The company of the good is the only boat
That can take you across the samsara sea.

Many are those whose locks are matted,
Many whose heads are closely shaved,
Many who pluck out all their hair,
Some of them wearing robes of ochre,
Some of them clad in other colors;
All these things for their stomach's sake,
Seeing Truth revealed before them,
Still the deluded see it not.

Feeble has grown the old man's body,
Toothless his gums and bald his head.
But there he goes upon his crutches,
Clinging firmly to fruitless hope!

Seeking for warmth, the penniless beggar,
closely crouches before his fire,
Or sits with only the sun to warm him,
nightly he lays him down to slumber,
Curling up to keep out the cold,
Hungrily eats his beggar's portion,
Out of the bowl his hands provide him,
Takes up his dwelling under a tree,
Still in his heart, a helpless prisoner,
Bound with the chains of empty hope.

Though for the sake of his salvation,
Man may go on a pilgrimage to Ganga Sagara,
Keep his vows and give to the poor,
Failing the Knowledge of the Highest,
Nothing of this assures him freedom,
Even in the span of a hundred lives.

Make a temple or tree, your home,
Clothe yourself in the skin of a deer,
And use the bare earth for your bed,
Avoiding gifts and sense delights,
Could any fail to be content,
Blest with dispassion such as these?

Plunge in Yoga or in enjoyment,
Mix with all or stand severely apart,
For the heart that delights ever in Brahman,
It is bliss, bliss, bliss, bliss without end.

Let a man but read from the Gita,
Drink of the Ganges but a drop,
Worship but once the Lord Almigthy,
And he will set at rest forever,
All his fear of the King of Death.

Birth unceasing! Death unceasing!
Ever to pass through a mother's womb!
Hard to cross is the world's wide ocean,
Lord, redeem me through Thy mercy.

Rags cast off along the highway,
Serve as a garment for the monk;
Freed from vice and freed from virtue,
Onward he wonders, in his sight,
nor I, nor you, nor the world exists.

Who am I? And who are you?
What is the place from which I come?
Who is my mother? Who my sire?
Pondering thus, perceive them all
As fancies only, without substance,
Give up the world as an idle dream.

Vishnu alone it is who dwells,
In you, in me, in everything;
Empty of meaning is your wrath,
And the impatience you reveal,
Seeing yourself in every one,
Have done with all diversity.

Be not attached to friend or foe,
To son, or kinsmen, peace or war,
If you aspire to Vishnu's realm
Look upon all things equally.

Give up the curse of lust and wrath,
Give up delusion, give up greed,
Remember who you really are,
Fools are they that are blind to self,
Cast into hell, they suffer there.

Everyday recite from the Gita,
Chant the thousand names of Vishnu,
Cherishing him within your heart,
Take delight to be with the holy,
Give your riches away to the poor.

He who yields to lust or pleasure,
Leaves his frame a prey to disease,
Yet, though death is the final ending,
None foreswears to sinfulness.

Remember, riches bring in grief,
Truly no joy abides in them;
A rich man even fears his son,
Thus is the position everywhere.

Control the self, restrain the breath,
Sift out the transient from the true,
Repeat the holy name of God,
And still the restless mind within,
To this, the universal rule,
Apply yourself, with heart and soul.

Cherish your Guru's lotus feet,
And free yourself without delay,
From the enslavement of this world,
Curb your senses, and your mind,
And see the Lord within your heart.

Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 2
For the soul,
there is neither birth nor death at any time.
He has not come into being,
does not come into being,
and will not come into being.
He is unborn, eternal, ever existing and primeval.
He is not slain when the body is slain.

As a person puts on new garments, giving up the old ones,
the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.

The soul can never be cut into pieces by any weapon,
nor burnt by fire,
nor moistened by water,
nor withered by the wind.

The individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble,
and can be neither burnt nor dried.
He is ever-lasting,
present everywhere,
unchangeable,
immovable
and eternally the same.

It is said that the soul is invisible,
inconceivable,
and immutable.
Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body.

One who has taken his birth is sure to die,
and after death,
one is sure to take birth again.
Therefore, in the unavoidable discharge of your duty
you should not lament.

All created beings are unmanifested in their beginning,
manifest in their interim state
and unmanifest again when annihilated.
So what need is there for lamentation?

O, descendent of Bharata,
he who dwells in the body can never be slain.
Therefore you need not grieve for any living being.

If, however,
you do not perform your religious duty of fighting,
then you will certainly incur sins for neglecting your duties
and Thus lose your reputation as a fighter.

Do thou fight for the sake of fighting,
without considering happiness or distress,
loss or gain,
victory or defeat,
and by so doing,
you shall never incur sin.

Thus far I have described
this knowledge to you through analytical study.
Now, listen as I explain it
in terms of working without fruitive results.
O, son of Prtha, when you act in such knowledge,
you can free yourself
from the bondage of works.

In this endeavour
there is no loss or diminution,
and a little advancement on this path
can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear.

The Vedas deal mainly with
the subject of the three modes of material nature.
O Arjuna, become transcendental to these three modes.
Be free from all dualities
and from all anxieties for gain and safety,
and be established in the self.

You have the right to perform your prescribed duty,
but you are not entitled to the fruits of action.
Never consider yourself
the cause of the results of your activities,
and never be attached to not doing your duty.

Perform your duty equipoised,
O Arjuna, abandoning all attachment to success or failure.
Such equanimity is called Yoga.

A man engaged in devotional activities
rids himself of both good and bad actions
even in this life.
Therefore strive for yoga,
which is the art of all work.

By thus engaging in devotional service,
to the Lord,
great sages or devotees free themselves
from the results of work in the material world.
In this way, they become free
from the cycle of birth and death,
and obtain the state beyond all miseries.

When your intelligence
has passed out of the dense forest of delusion,
you shall become indifferent
to all that has been heard
and all that is to be heard.

When your mind is no longer disturbed
by the flowery language of the Vedas,
and when it remains fixed
in the trance of self-realization,
then you will have attained
the divine consciousness.

O Krishna!
What are the symptoms of one
whose consciousness is thus merged in transcendence?
How does he speak,
and what is his language?
How does he sit,
and how does he walk?

O Partha!
When a man gives up
all varieties of desire for sense gratification,
which arise from mental concoction,
and when his mind thus purified
finds satisfaction in the Self alone,
then he is said to be
in pure transcendental consciousness.

One who is not disturbed in mind
even amidst the three-fold miseries,
or elated when there is happiness,
and who is free from attachment, fear and anger,
is called a sage of steady mind.

In the material world,
one who is unaffected
by whatever good or evil he may obtain;
neither praising it nor despising it,
is firmly fixed in perfect knowledge.

One who is able to withdraw his senses from sense objects,
as the tortoise draws his limb within the shell,
is firmly fixed in perfect consciousness.

The embodied soul
may be restricted from sense enjoyment,
though all the taste for sense delights remains.
But, ceasing such engagements
by experiencing a higher taste,
he is fixed in consciousness.

The senses are so strong and impetuous,
O Arjuna, that they forcibly carry away the mind,
even of a man of discrimination,
who is endeavouring to control them.

One who restrains his senses,
keeping them under full control,
and fixes his consciousness upon Me,
is know as a man of steady intelligence.

After contemplating the object of the senses,
a person develops attachment for them,
and from such attachment lust develops,
and from lust anger arises.

From anger complete delusion arises,
and from delusion,
bewilderment of memory.
When memory is bewildered,
intelligence is lost,
and when intelligence is lost,
one falls down again in the material pool.

But a person free from all attachment and aversion,
and able to control his senses
through regulative principles of freedom,
can obtain the complete mercy of the Lord.

For one, thus satisfied,
the three-fold miseries of material existence,
exist no longer;
in such satisfied consciousness,
one's intelligence is soon well-established.

One who is not connected with the Supreme,
can have neither transcendental intelligence
nor a steady mind,
without which there is no possibilty of peace.
And how can there be happiness without peace?

As a boat on the water
is swept away by a strong wind,
even one of the roaming senses
on which the mind focuses
can carry away a man's intelligence.

Therefore, O Mighty Armed One,
whose senses are restrained from their objects,
is certainly of steady intelligence.

What is night for all beings,
is the time of awakening for the self controlled;
and the time of awakening of all beings
is night for the introspective sage.

A person who is not disturbed
by the incessant flow of desires_
that enter, like rivers into the ocean,
which is ever being filled but is always still_
can alone achieve peace,
and not the man who strives to satisfy such desires.

A person who has given up
all desire for sense gratification,
who lives free from desires;
who has given up all sense of proprietorship,
and is devoid of false ego
He alone can attain real peace.

That is the way
of the spiritual and godly life,
after attaining which
a man is not bewildered.
If one is thus situated
even in the hour of death,
one can enter into the Kingdom of God.
Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 12 - Devotional Sevice

Which is considered to be more perfect,
those who are always properly engaged in your devotional service,
or those who worship the impersonal Brahman,
the Unmanifested?

Those who fix their minds on My personal form,
and are always engaged in worshipping Me
with great transcendental faith,
are considered by Me to be the most perfect.

But those who fully worship the Unmanifested,
that which lies beyond the perception of the senses,
the all-pervading, inconceivable, unchanging, fixed and immovable-
the impersonal conception of the Absolute Truth-
by controlling the various senses
and being equally disposed to everyone,
such persons, engaged in the welfare of all, at last achieve Me.

For those whose minds are attached to the Unmanifested,
impersonal feature of the Supreme,
advancement is very troublesome.
To make progress in that discipline
is always difficult for those who are embodied.

But those who worship Me,
giving up all their activities unto Me,
and being devoted to Me,
without deviation,
are engaged in devotional service
and are always meditating upon Me.

Having fixed their minds upon Me,
O Son of Prtha,
for them I am the swift deliverer
from the ocean of birth and death.

Just fix your mind upon Me,
the Supreme Lord,
and engage all your intelligence in Me,
Thus you will live in Me always,
without a doubt.

My dear Arjuna,
O winner of wealth,
if you cannot fix your mind upon Me without deviation,
then follow the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga.
In this way, develop a desire to attain me.

If you cannot practice the regulations of Bhakti yoga,
then just try to work for Me,
because, by working for Me,
you will come to the perfect stage.

If however, you are not able to work
in this consciousness of Me,
then try to act giving up all results of your work
and try to be self-situated.

If you cannot take to this practice,
then engage yourself in the cultivation of knowledge.
Better than knowledge, however,
is meditation,
and better than meditation
is renunciation of the fruits of action,
for by means of such renunciation
one can attain peace of mind.

One who is not envious
but is a kind friend to all living entitites,
who does not think himself a proprieter
and is free from false ego,
who is equal in both happiness and distress,
is forgiving.

One who is always satisfied,
self-controlled,
and engaged in devotional service,
with determination,
his mind and intelligence,
fixed on Me,
such a devotee of Mine
is very dear to Me.

He, for whom no one is put into difficulty
and who is not disturbed by anyone,
who is equipoised in happiness and distress,
fear and anxiety,
is very dear to Me.

My devotee who is not dependent
on the ordinary course of activities,
who is pure, expert, without cares,
free from all pains,
and not striving for some result,
is very dear to Me.

One who neither rejoices nor grieves,
who neither laments nor desires,
and who renounces both auspicious and inauspicious things ,
such a devotee
is very dear to Me.

One who is equal to friends and enemies,
who is equipoised in honour and dishonour,
heat and cold,
happiness and distress,
he is free from all association.

One who is equipoised in fame and infamy,
who is always free from contamination of association,
always silent and satisfied with anything,
who doesn't care for any residence,
who is fixed in knowledge
and who is engaged in devotional service,
such a person
is very dear to Me.

Those who follow
this unperishable path of devotional service,
and who completely engage themselves with faith,
making Me the Supreme goal,
are very dear to Me.
Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 15 - The Yoga of the Supreme Person
It is said that there is an imperishable banyan tree,
that has its roots upwards and its branches down,
and whose leaves are the Vedic hyms.
One who knows this tree
is the knower of the Vedas.

The branches of this tree
extend down-ward and up-ward
nourished by the three modes of material nature.
The twigs are the objects of the senses.
This tree also has roots going down,
and these are bound
to the fruitive actions of human society.

The real form of this tree
cannot be perceived in this world.
No one can understand where it ends,
where it begins,
or where its foundation is.
But with determination
one must cut down this strongly rooted tree,
with the weapon of detachment.

Thereafter, one must seek that place
from which having gone,
one never returns,
and there surrender to that Supreme Lord
from whom everything began,
and from whom everything has extended
since time immemorial.

Those who are free from false prestige,
illusion and false association,
who understand the eternal,
who are done with the material lust,
who are freed from the dualities of happiness,
and distress, and who unbewildered,
know how to surrender unto the Supreme Lord,
attain to that eternal kingdom.

That Supreme Abode of mine
is not illuminated by the sun or moon,
nor by fire and electricity,
Those who reach it
never return to the material world.

The living entities in this conditioned world
are My eternal fragmental parts,
Due to conditioned life,
they are struggling very hard
with the six senses,
which include the mind.

The living entity in the material world
carries his different conceptions of life
from one body to another,
as the air carries aromas.
Thus he takes one kind of body
and again quits it to take another.

The living entity,
thus taking another gross body,
obtains a certain type
of ear, eye, tongue, nose and sense of touch,
which are grouped about the mind.
He thus enjoys a particular set of sense objects.

The foolish cannot understand
how a living entity can quit his body,
nor can they understand
what sort of body he enjoys
under the spell of the modes of nature.
But one can see all this.

The endeavouring transcendentalists,
who are situated in self-realization,
can see all this clearly.
But those whose minds
are not developed
and who are not situated
in self-realization cannot see what is taking place,
though they may try to.

The splendour of the sun,
which dissipates the darkness of this whole world,
comes from Me.
And the splendour of the moon
and the splendour of the fire
are also from Me.

I enter into each planet
and by My energy
they stay in orbit.
I become the moon
and thereby supply the juice of life
to all vegetables.

I am the fire of digestion
in the bodies of all living entities,
and I join with the air of life,
outgoing and incoming
to digest
the four kinds of food-stuffs.

I am seated in everyone's heart,
and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness.
By all the Vedas, I am to be known,
Indeed I am the compiler of the Vedanta,
and I am the knower of the Vedas.

There are two classes of being,
the fallible and the infallible.
In the material world
every living entity is fallible,
and in the spiritual world
every living being is called infallible.

Besides these two,
there is the greatest living personality,
the Supreme Soul,
the imperishable Lord Himself,
who has entered the three worlds
and is maintaining them.

Because I am transcendental,
beyond the fallible and the infallible,
and because I am the greatest,
I am celebrated both in this world,
and in the Vedas
as that Supreme Person.

Whoever knows Me
as the Supreme Lord,
without doubting,
is the knower of everything.
He therefore engages himself
in full devotional service to Me,
O son of Bharata.

This is the most confidential part
of the Vedic scriptures,
O sinless One,
and it is disclosed now by Me.
Whoever understands this
will become wise,
and his endeavours
will know perfection.
Footprints
by Margaret Fishback Powers
One night I had a dream.
I was walking along the beach with the Lord,
and across the skies flashed scenes from my life.
In each scene I noticed
two sets of "footprints" in the sand.
One was mine,
and one was the Lord's.
When the last scene of my life appeared before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand,
and to my surprise,
I noticed that many times along the path of my life
there was only one set of footprints.
I noticed that it was at
the very lowest and saddest of times in my life.
I asked the Lord about it;
"Lord, You said that once I decided to follow You,
You would walk with me all the way,
but I notice that
during the most troublesome times in my life
there is only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why
You left my side
when I needed You most".
The Lord said,
"My precious child,
I never left you during your time of trial.
Where you see only one set of footprints,
I was carrying you".
Prayer of St. Francis of Assissi
Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

The oath and prayer of Maimonides
Jewish physician of the 12th Century

Thy eternal Providence has appointed me
to watch over the life and health of Thy creatures.
May the love for my art actuate me at all times;
may neither avarice, nor miserliness,
nor the thirst for glory, nor a great reputation engage my mind;
for the enemies of Truth and Philanthrophy
could easily deceive me,
and make me forgetful
of my lofty aim of doing good to Thy children.
May I never see in the patient
anything but a fellow creature in pain,
Grant me strength, time and opportunity,
always to correct what I have acquired,
always to extend its domain,
for knowledge is immense,
and the spirit of man can extend infinitely,
to enrich itself daily,
with new requirements.
Today he can discover his errors of yesterday,
and tomorrow he may obtain a new light
on what he thinks himself sure of today.
O God, Thou hast appointed me
to watch over the life and death of Thy creatures;
here I am ready for my vocation.
